The spring tour of the EU was a great success. The band played 23 shows in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland and the Netherlands! The crowds were quite good this time, and our following is steadily growing. We had a blast playing our new songs and tweaked and perfected some older tunes for a couple of fresh sets. Watch for some videos and pictures to come - we recorded many of the shows and can't wait to share them with you.
Sunday, January 14:
The recording session in Prague was a huge success, and we managed to record the basic tracks for 14 new songs. The studio owner, Lukas Martinek, likes to lock it up around 6 PM, so we had a nice schedule, recording from 10 to 6, then we had time for some nice dinners in the city center. Those were usually followed by some beers in the hotel with some prep-work for the next day's songs. Engineer Derek Saxenmeyer twiddled the knobs and moved the microphones to get us killer drum tones, and we tried varieties of snare drums to fit each song. The drum room is HUGE and the room mics very useful for getting that BIG rock drum sound. Dave Marks (bassist, producer) worked closely with Nick Owsianka to get the very best drum parts to suit each track. We had some guide tracks from demos, and I was able to spend much of the time lying on the couch, Rick Ruben-style and really concentrate on the results. I did have to play some live guitar, but only as a guide for Nick.
Every day around 1 PM we would take a break and enjoy a big spread of bread, meats, vegetables and fruit prepared by master smorgasbordsman Dennis Wohlgemuth (heh). Then back to work until the 6 PM church bell rang!
We did a lot of work, and now I am getting some much needed rest in Italy with the family! Stay tuned for more updates as we do overdubs and also get ready for the spring tour that kicks off March 6th in Germany.
